General Motors has designed an electric version of their off-road behemoth, the Hummer. The Hummer EV is expected to be available to adventurous drivers in 2022.
Electric Off-Road Supertruck
The GMC Hummer is getting an electric version that promises to be as rugged as the original. The Hummer was developed from an army vehicle known for its off-road capabilities and the electric version is expected to carry on that tradition.
The foundation of the Hummer EV’s performance will be a three-motor e4WD system enabling extreme off-road adventures. GM reports the vehicle can climb 60-percent grades in forward or reverse, scale 18-inch vertical obstacles and travel through 2 feet of water.
Customizable Drive Mode
The other pillar of the Hummer EV’s capabilities is the GM-exclusive Drive Mode Control. This system comes with four preset modes as well as My Mode, which allows drivers to set their own parameters. The different modes are designed to handle everything from regular highway driving to crawling over rocks and fording streams. The system also includes a mode for optimized trailering.
Low Center of Gravity
As an electric vehicle, the Hummer EV is not only efficient but uniquely suited to off-road performance. The location of the batteries that power the truck gives it a low center of gravity and makes it very stable. This also gives the Hummer optimal ground clearance.
